PRIVATE HOURS

There is something cinematic about a room after everyone else has left.

PRIVATE HOURS imagines a quiet domestic world suspended somewhere between the elegance of the 1950s and the restraint of contemporary fashion. Rather than recreating a period interior literally, the story reduces each room to its essential elements: a sofa and coffee table, a desk and chair, a bed, a kitchen table, a bathtub. Everything else disappears.

Against these minimal sets, Chen Yichen and Luo Xinyi move through a series of carefully composed moments that feel intimate without becoming overtly romantic. Sometimes they occupy the same space while seeming completely absorbed in separate thoughts. In other images, a glance or the smallest shift in posture creates the suggestion of a relationship without explaining it.

The wardrobe follows the same philosophy. Wide-leg tailoring, softly structured jackets, open shirts and polished leather shoes give Yichen a distinctly mid-century silhouette, while Yining moves between satin dresses in deep burgundy, emerald, rust and muted rose. The references are unmistakably vintage, but the styling avoids nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake.

What gives the story its modern edge is the simplicity.

There are no elaborate interiors and no unnecessary decoration. Each set exists almost like a stage, allowing color, body language and light to carry the narrative. Warm amber tones dominate some frames, while dusty pink, pale blue and soft neutrals transform others. Hard directional shadows occasionally cut through the scenes, creating the impression of sunlight entering a room that does not actually exist.

The result sits somewhere between fashion editorial and imagined domestic life.

Two people. A handful of rooms. A sequence of private moments that may or may not belong to the same story.

PRIVATE HOURS is less interested in telling us who these people are than in leaving us with the feeling that we have arrived just before something happened, or perhaps just after.
