Looking back at Issue 18, Yelling Youth captures PERIOD at a very early point in its evolution. Published in September 2017, the issue marked an important shift for the magazine: it was the first time we deliberately featured both male and female models within the same issue, expanding the visual language of PERIOD beyond a single-gender approach.
The editorial itself feels unmistakably rooted in that moment. Yelling Youth is warm, saturated and unapologetically youthful. Deep reds, amber light and sun-washed golds create an almost nostalgic atmosphere, while the styling moves between denim, sheer fabrics, leather, metallic finishes and deliberately uncomplicated silhouettes.
Rather than relying on elaborate locations or oversized sets, the photographs keep the attention on the models. Bodies, expressions, posture and clothing become the composition. A sheer blouse against red corduroy, a vivid monochromatic red look, exposed denim and skin, glossy black leather, or a simple gold top photographed in warm studio light all carry the story forward.
There is also an interesting tension throughout the series between softness and rebellion. Romantic fabrics sit beside distressed construction. Polished beauty appears alongside raw denim. Masculine and feminine references are allowed to coexist without needing to be separated into different visual worlds.
That approach feels particularly significant when viewed from the perspective of PERIOD today. Issue 18 came long before the magazine's current visual identity had fully developed, but many of the ideas that would continue to surface later were already present: experimentation with gender, an interest in the body, unconventional styling and a willingness to let contrasting personalities share the same editorial space.
Yelling Youth remains a snapshot of a magazine still discovering what it wanted to become, and that is precisely what makes returning to it interesting.
