FROM THE ARCHIVE: Mocca Velvet for SKINS
MOCCA VELVET returns from the PERIOD archives as a striking study of the male form, saturated color, and controlled movement. Photographed by Ysor Cóndor, the editorial strips the image back to its most essential elements: body, light, shadow, and an intense turquoise palette.
Featuring Steven Castillo, the series relies on strong posing and tightly composed portraits rather than elaborate styling or sets. The monochromatic lighting transforms the body into something almost sculptural, allowing the contours of the shoulders, torso, arms, and profile to define each frame.
There is a sensuality to the photographs, but the strongest element is their restraint. Rather than relying on complicated sets or excessive styling, MOCCA VELVET finds its impact through color, posture, skin, and shadow.
Looking back at the shoot now, it captures an important part of PERIOD's early visual language: bold color, confident bodies, experimentation, and an interest in presenting menswear imagery beyond conventional fashion portraiture.
MOCCA VELVET remains one of those archive stories that feels immediately recognizable, even years later.
